Sunday in McMurdo is quiet and relaxed: the galley opens late and serves a big brunch complete with waffles to order. Almost everyone works six-day weeks, and Sunday is when they enjoy themselves. Field trips take people to see out-of-town scenery; the bowling alley is open; small groups go cross-country skiing or make the full-day trek to Castle Rock; and gray warehouse doors only partially conceal the thump of garage band practice.
Today was picturesque, crisp, and warm. At 10:30 p.m. the usual ice outside Building 155 was all puddles reflecting a bottomless blue sky. Mt. Morning occasionally looked out at us from across McMurdo Sound before slow trains of clouds covered it up again. Nearly every day confronts us with some version of this magnificent scenery. We try to pass it along to you with each day’s story, but we always end up with a surplus. Today, we thought, might be a good time to catch up.
