Tools & Technology: Digital Cameras
Researchers use digital cameras to photograph what they see on the surface of the ice sheet. From the air, researchers can see large features, like lakes, rivers of melt water, and deep holes (called moulins). When hiking on the glacier, researchers can examine smaller features, like pock marks (called cryoconites) caused by darker-colored pebbles and dust that speed melting of the ice surface. By studying these features researchers can learn more about how the ice sheet behaves.
