Getting Underway
It’s Friday, and it’s time to get going! The original plan was for the Healy to leave Dutch Harbor at 3 p.m. (Excuse me, “1500 hours.”) But the weather had turned lousy overnight. A five-minute stroll up the road to go shopping at Alaska Shipping Supply put me in danger of having the skin blasted off my face by the wind-blown gravel. That’s how it felt, anyway.
Because of the weather, departure was delayed until 8 p.m. While we waited we had an orientation from the Coast Guard, an abandon-ship drill, and a lot of time on deck enjoying the scenery under the clearing skies.
